Betfair commenced wagering on Australian racing in early 2003 and their market share, while still only small by comparison with the more traditional tote and bookmaker operators, has steadily grown.

A few months after the commencement of Betfair's Australian operations, on June 28 2003, during his weekly "Racing To The Max" radio show heard on Sydney's 2SM and some other stations throughout NSW, journalist Max Presnell stated to his audience that he had been told that sometime the following week an announcement would be made to the effect that betting exchanges would be outlawed in Australia.

IN-THE-RUN REVOLT?

Will there one day be a revolt by punters wanting to bet “in-the-run” or “in-the- play” on racing and sports events? Maybe. At the moment, such a betting approach via the Internet or Betfair is banned in Australia.

We might well ask why? Is there any valid reason for denying Aussie computer punters the chance to bet while an event is happening, especially when it’s something like a golf tournament?
