"I have never had so much success (or fun) with the punt. Thanx heaps and great
punting to all!”
"I am very appreciative of the efforts that go into producing this outstanding information."
I had something else planned for this month’s Plan of the Month, but it will have to wait until next month.
That’s because I became intrigued by the fascinating article written by P.B. King (pages 4–5 last month).
Good old P.B., you can always rely on him to come up with something special.
The quadrella had its “birth” in Victoria but in more recent years has spread TAB-wide. It remains one of the best opportunities for nabbing a large collect for a relatively small outlay.
It is a frustrating type of bet, much like the First 4 (which requires the punter to name the first four horses across the line). The quadrella seeks four winners of four selected races. No easy task, unless you can fling a lot of money at the bet in wide combinations, and then a profit is not guaranteed.
Coming from Victoria, I originally found it hard to understand what all the fuss was about when the Quadrella (Quaddie) was introduced by TAB Ltd into New South Wales.
Surfing some of the racing discussion forums, it became apparent that punters in New South Wales have only now realised what their fellow punters in Victoria have known for years – Quadrella betting offers one of the best value bets available.
Have today’s astute form analysts become a little too smart for their own good? I think so.
In terms of acquiring frequent value, they have become victims of their own knowledge.
Databases, video form, extensive media coverage and a host of other aids give the contemporary punter a marked advantage over their counterparts of years gone by.
I have been playing around with the quadrella lately, seeking a way of breaking the cost back, whilst not losing sight of the main objective, which is to WIN it. It’s easy to cut back too far, and then to realise later on that for the sake of a dollar or so, you might have won the big prize. Big prizes are my aim in this article.
With the big quadrella pool opening up any time now, I am presenting you with some of my thoughts re capturing it. Just once a year would do the trick, and twice or three times would be magic. It’s a lot easier for you and me than Lotto (impossible), lotteries (nearly impossible) and a whole range of stuff I know very little about. Racing is after all one of our major knowledge bases, and we ought to have a better chance than most.
