"I have never had so much success (or fun) with the punt. Thanx heaps and great
punting to all!”
"I am very appreciative of the efforts that go into producing this outstanding information."
The
success, or failure, of Sydney's big bookie breakthrough could
determine the ultimate future of our bagmen. If the idea doesn't work,
you can start the countdown for the exodus of bookies from our racing
scene.
Since August 1, racegoers at Sydney's four city tracks
have been able to take quinella bets with bookies, and back horses for a
place only, as well as for win and each-way. The idea was for a trial
period on the metropolitan tracks and then to extend the betting
throughout New South Wales. Other States will, no doubt, follow Sydney's
bold lead if the idea is successful.
You’ll never find your gold on a sandy beach
You’ll never drill for oil on a city street
I know you’re looking for a ruby in a mountain of rocks
But there ain’t no coupe de ville hiding at the bottom of a cracker jack box
The words above were written in a totally different context to those you would expect to read in Practical Punting Monthly.
In fact they are taken from the Jim Steinman lyrics, Two Out Of Three Ain’t Bad, the hit single that made Meatloaf (Marvin Lee Aday) a rock star back in 1977 with his album Bat Out Of Hell.
One of the oldest methods of racehorse investment is the quinella. It’s a lot older than you and I, and it makes a lot of sense.
Recently I was going over my past year’s investments, and I was examining the possibility of having backed all my selections each way. As against having twice the investment on the win, the each way possibility fell a long way behind.
However, while the profit would have been reduced, the insurance factor always has to be taken into consideration. There was one sequence of losers that had my teeth on edge, and this could have been greatly relieved had I been betting each way.
Although they are extremely popular, quinellas are probably the least understood of all the exotic bets. Many canny professionals make a living from quinellas, while the average punter loses his money on them.
It's all a matter of knowing how to bet them. They can provide the careful and astute punter with some generous returns. Knowing how much a quinella pairing is going to pay is most useful for the dedicated Q Fan.
Those punters who enjoy backing at level stakes for the win usually have a lot of fun. Some may win a few percent on their turnover during a year, most will lose a little. It all depends, naturally, on how good your selections are!
Level stakes betting, though, doesn't offer an enormous degree of excitement. You can bet and bet, and get on top a bit, and then fall back a bit and many times you'll be cursing your luck when your fancy gets pipped for first spot.
