Watch Your Pocket

AND WATCH YOUR HORSES

How many truly great trainers are there in Australia today? My vote says only a handful.

Most trainers, in my opinion, are sad excuses for conditioners of horseflesh! I know that's a bold statement but just have a close look at the condition in which many horses are presented in the mounting yards around the nation, particularly on minor country tracks. I think you'll see what I mean.

Racing faces those ‘stay away’ punters

TRACK OR HOME THE BIG BATTLE

At the moment Australian racing should be pretty pleased with itself. Booming carnivals, record prizemoney and TAB turnover reflect a healthy portrait of a flourishing industry.

I would like you to think of this series as a painting being completed. So far we have painted the head of the horse. Now we will build on this and I want to share with you the rest of my mounting yard "routine".

THE ‘BODYLINE’ OF WINNING (Part 1)

So you study the form, listen to the radio and watch the money on the tote. Have you ever studied a horse in the mounting yard and known what to look for?

The "House Full" sign would be hung at the gates of Australia's racetracks every Saturday if punters ever realised the answer to the mystery called "the next race" is often revealed in the stalls and the mounting yard.
