They are there in front of us every day. They hold the clues to winners. Why, then, do we consistently ignore them?I am, you may realise already, talking about stewards' reports. Yes, that 'old faithful" which we have heard mentioned so many times when it comes to winners being grinners.

As far back as I can remember, people have been telling me that much of the mystery of racing can be solved by reading the reports issued by the stewards. One pro punter I know refers to them as "virtual tipping sheets", which may be overstating the case but which does have some veracity.Let's take the case of the stewards of the Thoroughbred Racing Board in Sydney. Last September, apart from issuing their usual reports, they also began highlighting a couple of horses each Thursday prior to the Saturday racing.

Answer this question honestly: How much notice do you take of stewards' reports? A lot? Not much? None? If you are like the majority of punters the answer will be none.I did a survey some months back and quizzed 500 regular punters at a mid-city TAB agency in Sydney. Only 23 said they took a lot of notice of stewards' reports. Another 100 or so said they occasionally looked at them, while the rest said they NEVER read a word of what the stewards reported.
