"I have never had so much success (or fun) with the punt. Thanx heaps and great
punting to all!”
"I am very appreciative of the efforts that go into producing this outstanding information."
In another of my articles this month, I issued a general warning about getting too deeply involved in the Cups’ season, which only lasts from beginning to end maybe three weeks maximum.
This is nothing new on my part, because I take the view that I will have new readers every year and anyway the old ones can always do with a reminder that there are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamed of in that short period of time. Above all other things, the issue of making or losing money should be paramount in your mind when you come to racing investment.
Can we use a method of deducing the winner of the Golden Slipper using a carefully defined set of rules? I think we can.
These rules should apply not just for this year, but for any year. Having trawled my way back through the history of this glorious race I have come to some conclusions about what each contender needs within its requirements to win. It’s a tactic I often use to help create a short-list of contenders and it works especially well with the big races.
A friend of mine has a theory, and he claims that it works out in practice. It's to do with 2yo racing.
His theory is that with the youngsters the tipsters' polls are your best guide to winners.
"It makes sense, because the form pans out well, and if there's no form, then you can take the formline through the trainers," he told me. "The press boys know this. It's why you can count on their tipping to be well above average in the 2yo races."
Serious 2yo racing usually kicks off in late September/ early October every season. It’s when we get the first look at the juveniles who may turn out to be the superstars of the future.
Just check back to October 4 last year (2003) and the first 2yo race at a Sydney Saturday meeting saw the emergence of Dance Hero and Charge Forward, both of whom went on to dominate the Golden Slipper.
