The Best of PPM –  a great new series

BLAST FROM THE PAST (Part 1)

In the almost eight years of its life, P.P.M. has brought its readers many system and staking ideas. A selection of them was put together in The Cold Collection book and proved highly successful. We still, though, receive letters from readers asking about plans that were published years ago.

In this series, I have combed through the early P.P.M's and found a number of betting ideas that deserve fresh evaluation. Let's begin firstly with a look at staking. As we have stated repeatedly in P.P.M., even the cleverest punters will not win unless they manage their money properly. It is a most difficult task, and seasoned punters are not immune from poor staking habits.

DAYS OF GLORY (Part 2)

Glancing back through the pages of P.P.M. since its inception in April, 1985, I never cease to be surprised at the wealth of information they have contained. It wasn't a hard task to find any number of systems and betting ideas which are worth repeating; the problem was to choose which ones to publish!

Ease the pain – shoot for more than one horse

IT’S JUST NOT ‘DOUBLE DUTCH’

I was told many years ago to forget about single-horse betting. Why, a friend asked me, bet one horse in a race when you can bet three, even four, and make a profit if one of them wins?

A good question. I suppose it's a case of greed. If we can land the winner in one bet we get the lot. If we back three, we may win but we win less. At least, that's the theory.

This friend, I should point out, made a living (not a grand one, I admit) from Dutch Book betting. He followed the basic textbook Dutch Book technique.

GO DUTCH FOR PROFIT DELIGHT

"Just writing to thank you all at Practical Punting Monthly for your Punters Comp, which is terrific and has been a real help to me when betting at home on a Saturday afternoon using my TAB account. However, I sometimes go down to my local PubTab or Tabaret and want to know if you have a 'simple' formula that I can use with a hand-held calculator on such occasions?" asks Rae Stephenson from an outer Melbourne suburb.

MULTI MAGIC

When it comes to multiple punting, the small bettor often feels cheated. The general belief seems to be that only big-betting punters can benefit from backing more than one horse in a race.

As we've stated before in PPM, this is not true, because no matter how much, you bet you can still win just as much, in percentage terms, as the big punters. Your betting stake is merely cut back; where the big punter bets to take out $100 or $1,000 you bet only to take out, say, $20.

So how is it done? How does a small punter arrange his multiple bets? And can the multiples be operated in more ways than just betting two or more horses in the one race?
